Do I need a professional headshot photo?

For purposes of our audition process, you do not need to provide a professional head shot photo. However, providing a recognizable recent photo is critical, as we literally typically get well over 100 auditioners (don't let that number discourage you). We need to easily put a name with a face. Consequently, you will be at a disadvantage if you don't provide a recent, recognizable photo at auditions. A school picture or digital camera shot taken and printed out merely an hour before you head out for your audition is fine.

Do I need to request a specific time slot for auditions?

Unless otherwise specifically stated on the audition announcement, you do not need to reserve a time slot for your auditions. We typically hold "open auditions" for our productions. Come any time during the audition times and you will audition in the order you arrived.

Do I need to stay the entire time for open auditions?

You do not need to stay the entire time during the noted audition hours. You are free to leave after you've had an opportunity to present your monologue and/or song and/or dance. Note, you may need to stay the entire time if you are asked to attend call-backs.

Do I need to stay the entire time for Call Backs?

Depending on the production, the role(s) you are being considered for and/or how casting is shaping up, you may be asked to attend for the entire call-back session.

What is a "monologue" and where can I find one?

A monologue is a scene for one actor who is speaking aloud to herself, talking to another character or talking to the audience, uninterrupted. It is frequently used by a casting Director to give the actor an opportunity to demonstrate her acting ability. A monologue can be obtained from essentially any script, or can be made up. There are also several books that provide examples of monologues for use in auditions. Some examples for young performers include: Monologues for Young Actors, Magnificent Monologues for Kids, Magnificent Monologues for Teens, and Audition Monologues: Power Pieces for Kids and Teens.

What needs to be on an audition resume?

Your audition resume should include:

  • your age
  • a listing of any shows you have done, including the title of the show, your role if you acted in the show, or your responsibilities if you were in the crew, director's name, and theater company
  • theater/singing/dance classes you have taken
  • any special skills you may have (e.g., gymnastics, martial arts, magic, juggling, etc.)

Will there be an accompanist at auditions?

We typically do not have an accompanist available at auditions for musicals. If we do, we will likely make special note of it on the auditions page. Consequently, you should assume there will not be an accompanist available. It is recommended that you bring a CD without vocals to sing along with, rather than sing a cappella.

What if I have a scheduling conflict?

You can list any conflicts on the audition form, so the director knows when you will not be available. We typically try to avoid practices on Friday nights or Saturdays due to expected conflicts with sports and family commitments. Please note, however, there will likely be rehearsals the Friday and/or Saturdays just prior to the performance.

I don't like singing or dancing. Are there any non-musical roles available?

If you don't like singing or dancing, there may be limited roles in musical productions. However, we expect to periodically have non-musical productions as well. Additionally, have you considered any behind-the-scenes work? There are many exciting opportunities available for children and adults as part of our stage crew and technical crew, where you can learn a lot about theatrical productions (e.g., lighting, sound, props, set construction, etc.). If you have an interest in being part of the stage and/or technical crew, please e-mail us at: ActingUp@ActingUp.com; please include the subject header "I'm interested in Stage/Tech Crew".

How much of a time comittment will this be?

The time commitment for a production will depend on the cast member's particular role. For example, in a production such as The Wizard of Oz, "Dorothy" needed to be at most rehearsals, while most "Munchkin's" had rehearsal once a week or less.

Is there a participation fee or costume fee?

For our first 5 years we were fortunate enough to avoid requiring a participation fee. However, in 2010, the cost to rent the Mason High School Theater went up dramatically. Regretfully, starting with our Spring 2011 production, there will be a "facilities" fee per actor (no fee for crew), to partially off-set this significant increase in cost.

We do not expect to have any costume fees. However, certain actors may be asked to provide certain basic elements for their costume (e.g., shoes, black leotard, black pants, etc.).

The only other cost to you is a sincere commitment to have a great time!

What if I don't get a part?

Although an individual may be very talented, they may not be right for a part for a particular production. In the event you do not get a part, you may be interested in remaining involved with the production in any of the following areas: Set Crew, Sound, Costumes, Advertising / Publicity, Lighting, Make-up, Set Construction, Tickets / Concessions, and/or Ushering. If so, please contact us at: ActingUp@ActingUp.com

In any event, if you do not get cast, please do not be discouraged. Please continue to check this website for updates on auditions for future productions.
