Spring '07 Production

A wager between the gods...a clash of cultures...and the ultimate sacrifice for love -- this is: Once on this Island! Our Spring 2007 production was a Caribbean-flavored musical, set on an unnamed island in the French Antilles. The story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love above her class, is told around a fire by a group of Caribbean peasants as they wait out a terrible storm. Once on This Island (OOTI) uses the tradition of storytelling to pass down history, values and insight from one generation to the next. The result is a lesson to be passed along for generations to come. With the gods looking over her, Ti Moune’s journey of unrequited love comes to prove that the power of love is stronger than the power of death. Ti Moune’s courage and spirit prove that love can withstand the storm, cross the Earth, and survive even in the face of death.

Four performances were held over May 11-13, 2007 at the Mason High School and Community Center Theater.

Critically Acclaimed

OOTI has been nominated for 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. OOTI won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best Musical. It's catchy, contemporary, and Caribbean-flavored score was written by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (of Ragtime and the animated film Anastasia).

Community Response

Acting Up,
c/o Lori Paddock,

I wanted to send your theatre group a thank you card. I searched your website but couldn’t find a mailing address so I’ve resorted to sending an email thank you.

On behalf of the Mason Health Care Center Residents and Staff I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to visit us and share a part of you current production, “Once on This Island,” with us. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the performances. The laii necklaces were a big hit. I did see the Pulse Journal Article about the visit and I will be posting it on our bulletin board for the residents. Your visit was a wonderful expression of charity and the musical theatre was an awesome treat for our residents. We wish you the best success on your opening night this coming week and want to say, “Break A Leg.”

Please remember us in the future. We’d love to have you visit us again.

Thank You,

Shonda Malik MT AD
